In 2004, The Cultural Committee of the Friends of Sourat (Sourat is a village located in North Lebanon),
organized a musical evening and invited Charbel Rouhana to produce a composition for a French trio composed of a cello, a piano and a violin, accompanied by oriental instruments, the Oud, the Rik and the Kanun.
The performance was initially planned to consist of a couple of compositions but on the day of the performance, the program consisted of fourteen pieces and required the addition of more instruments. It was the birth of the album “Sourat Trait d'Union”.
“Sourat Trait d'Union” bridges the gap between Middle-Eastern and Occidental musical traditions with an interplay of Eastern and Western instruments. The disc contains 14 songs drawn mainly from the traditional Armenian and Oriental repertoire. It is characterized by the presence of the Oud with the primary intention to portray it as an essential instrument in the musical dialogue between the various instruments. It is a link between fragments of various musical traditions with a modern spirit in composition and arrangement.
“Sourat Trait d'Union” is a fusion of Occidental and Oriental instruments that are woven together in an interplay only Charbel Rouhana can pull.
